The annual BIG PICK 2024!
Our annual BIG PICK was held this year on Sunday 15th September. Depsite poor weather, a record 50+ people turned out to help us clean up our wonderful town!
Litter picking volunteers followed carefully planned instructions created by our dedicated team and set off in small groups to pick litter in different parts of the town centre.
Afterwards, we all enjoyed hot tea and coffee provided by the Moorings Pub, and delicious home baked cakes provided by our talented organisers.
Pickers were offered free picking sticks and hoops to help them maintain their own streets and we were delighted that so many new people registered as pickers and joined the movement.

Together we can make a difference!
LitterFreeSB at the Great Get Together
Fun was to be had and friends to be made at Crow Wood Park’s Great Get Together on Sunday 7th July.
Friends and supporters dropped by the LitterfreeSB stall for a chat and to catch up with what we have been doing over the last twelve months.
Children and adults alike also enjoyed participating in our litter picking and sorting games.
There was a lot of interest in our regular group picks as well as our Litter Picking Champions initiative and, as a result, we have already loaned out kit to new volunteers showing an interest in keeping streets where they live clean and tidy.
Copley Woods (Wakefield Road) Project
This year, LitterfreeSB has adopted Copley Woods (Wakefield Road) as their major project for local environmental improvement.
Copley Woods is a local area of great beauty but has been sadly neglected and somewhat abused over recent years. This year, volunteers from LitterfreeSB have already collected over thirty large bags of litter and fly tipped waste on two specially organised picks at the location.
We hope to visit again throughout the summer and into the autumn, restoring the woods to their full glory.
LitterFreeSB Litter Picking Champion Initiative
LFSB’s groundbreaking initiative to establish a litter picking champion for every street in the Sowerby Bridge area continues to go from strength to strength.
We now supply equipment to dozens of wonderful people who carry out regular ‘guerilla’ litter picks in and around the streets where they live.

Many also attend our monthly group picks, so the total amount of litter collected is steadily increasing from week to week. Anyone interested in becoming a champion for their street, and making that special difference to their community, can obtain free equipment by emailing us at litterfreesb@gmail.com
BBC Make A Difference Award 2024
LitterfreeSB have been recognised as Highly Commended as one of four finalists in the Green Category of the BBC Radio Leeds, Make a Difference Awards for 2024.

A team of ten of our dedicated pickers and organisers travelled to Leeds Amouries to enjoy a lavish ceremony and collect our award. We were treated to Prosecco, a cream tea and a goodie bag! This moving and inspiring event celebrated the work of volunteers in local communities and we felt proud to have played our part and been recognised.

We were previously recognised in 2021 when we won the Calderdale Community Spirit award. Our dedicated litter pickers swapped their tabards for their glad rags to proudly collect this award in recognition of all their hard work and commitment.
